Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

Grants of up to £7,500 towards air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, and biomass boilers to help homeowners replace fossil fuel heating systems.

Eligibility Requirements:

✓ You own the property (or are a private landlord)
✓ The property is located in England or Wales
✓ You have a valid EPC (dated after April 2020)
✓ You are replacing a fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil, LPG, electric)
✓ No previous BUS voucher has been used at the property

Warm Homes: Local Grant

Council-administered grants aimed at providing insulation, heat pumps, and major energy efficiency improvements for lower-income households.

Eligibility Requirements:

✓ Your household income is below the local threshold
✓ Your home has a low EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
✓ The property is located in England
✓ You own or privately rent the property
✓ Your council is currently participating in the scheme

Great British Insulation Scheme

Closed on 31 March 2026

This scheme closed on 31 March 2026. It paid for cavity wall and loft insulation through energy suppliers. Lower-income households can now get insulation through the Warm Homes: Local Grant or ECO4 instead.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.
• You have unfilled cavity walls or insufficient loft insulation.
• Either: You live in council tax bands A-D (Eng) or A-E (Scot/Wales).
• Or: You receive qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, etc).

ECO4 Scheme

Free Energy Efficiency Measures

Energy company obligation scheme providing fully funded insulation, heating, and renewable energy measures for eligible households. It runs until 31 December 2026.

Eligibility Requirements:

• You receive qualifying benefits (e.g. Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit).
• Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G.
• The property is in Great Britain.
• You own or rent the property.

Future Funding April 2027

Consumer Loan Scheme

Low/zero-interest loans backed by the government for solar panels, heat pumps, and battery storage. Part of a massive £1.7 billion green finance package.

✓ Available from April 2027.
✓ Specifically for solar panels, heat pumps, and battery storage.
✓ Open to homeowners across the entire UK.
✓ Interest rates are expected to be significantly below market rates.

What is the Warm Homes Plan?

The Warm Homes Plan is the UK government's £15 billion programme to upgrade 5 million homes by 2030. It includes grants for insulation, heat pumps, and energy efficiency improvements, along with new building regulations and the expansion of existing schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Can I get a heat pump for free?

If you qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant or ECO4, you may receive a heat pump at no cost. Otherwise, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 towards the cost, meaning you typically pay £2,500-£10,500 for the remainder of the installation.

Do I need to improve my EPC rating?

All rental properties must reach EPC Band C by 2030. Homeowners are not currently required by law to upgrade, but doing so drastically reduces energy bills and unlocks eligibility for these grants. An EPC assessment costs £60-£120.

Can I combine multiple grants?

In many cases, yes. For example, you could receive free insulation through the Warm Homes: Local Grant, then apply for a BUS grant to install a heat pump. Your installer or local council can advise on the best combination for your specific situation.

How do I find a TrustMark-registered installer?

Most government grants require a TrustMark-registered installer to complete the work and claim the funding on your behalf.
